The Letters We Never Sent

“I keep every sentence I could not give you folded inside the cedar drawer, waiting for a season that will not arrive.”

I keep every sentence I could not give you
folded inside the cedar drawer,
beneath the winter linens and dried lavender,
waiting for a season that will not arrive.
There is a quiet room inside the throat
where all the discarded names retreat.
We learned to speak of weather and the trains,
while our true confessions starved between our teeth.
Perhaps in another city, or another life,
you open an envelope with ink still damp,
and read the simple truth we buried here:
that loving you was never a mistake,
only the timing was merciless.
Tonight the rain taps against the glass,
a steady rhythm of what might have been.
I do not burn the letters anymore.
I let them rest, like stones beneath clear water,
preserved in all their silent, heavy grace.
